Description of "The Soul in There: 14 Stories"
A series of stories difficult to put out of mind involving a range of characters from children to a sexagenarian all trying, sometimes heroically and sometimes pathetically, to simply get along in a surreal world of grief and pain and sometimes horror. With action condensed to no more than a few hours, sometimes only minutes, these stories and vignettes are imaginative, in A series of stories difficult to put out of mind involving a range of characters from children to a sexagenarian all trying, sometimes heroically and sometimes pathetically, to simply get along in a surreal world of grief and pain and sometimes horror. With action condensed to no more than a few hours, sometimes only minutes, these stories and vignettes are imaginative, intense, sometimes outrageous, always gripping.
Loneliness, loss, child abuse, grief, alcoholism, encounters with mindless violence, and, in the end, the possibility of redemption constitute the lot of the characters. We meet a runaway nine-year-old boy in a shopping mall whose full bladder and horrifying memories are eased by the kindness of strangers, a young woman trying to hold her life together in Chicago's Lincoln Park who gets the best of a handsome con man, a housewife who relives the pain of a long life with her newly dead husband as she waits all night to be certain that he's really dead. There's a man who comes to grips with bigotry by memories of his own experiences of grief and love, a man and a young woman in a downtown parking maze confronting a contemporary minotaur, and a doomed raccoon that's found by a boy who also seems doomed until he's graced by an encounter with a sculpture at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
The stories are written in an energetic style and sometimes daring syntax. The narrators at times have a wise-guy edge, a ghostly presence, or an amused tone. But they're always sympathetic, even to the lowliest and sickliest of characters, imparting to them a dimension of humanity sometimes unexpected.
